We all tell stories about ourselves and our world, but too often we accept pre-scripted psychiatric accounts of personal weakness, deficit and dysfunction without question. We are expected to accept those labels as our narrative truth even though this adds more layers of harm and unfairness.
The current mental health system is saturated with medicalised language that defines emotional and psychological distress as ‘mental illness’, disconnecting the person from the social circumstances of their lives. This workshop takes a critical perspective by challenging those medicalised ideas, reflecting on the impact of psychiatric labels to consider the meanings they create and how this affects our understanding of ourselves, our identities, our beliefs and our values. Together we will explore alternative ways of thinking about our difficulties through The Power Threat Meaning Framework (PTMF/MTMF). This is a relatively new, non-diagnostic structure for understanding and responding to emotional distress that makes links between people’s suffering and their life circumstances, which shows that 'symptoms of mental illness' are better understood as necessary survival strategies.
Through collaborative exploration of the PTMF/MTMF core questions attendees will engage in mutual learning to co-reflect on more meaningful ways of thinking about themselves and their lives that empowers them to take back control of their own destiny, while rewriting their story using their own words.
Amanda Griffiths - A British trauma survivor/activist who promotes non-medicalised alternatives to the traditional ways of thinking about emotional distress. Dissatisfied with the harmful medicalised explanation that reframed her own suffering, Amanda successfully challenged the deeply insulting psychiatric label that obscured the root cause of her difficulties. Benefiting from the humane approach of the Power Threat Meaning Framework that linked her distress with the social circumstances of her life, Amanda advocates for everyone's right to think about their experiences considering any ideas, theories, and frameworks they find helpful. Amanda draws on these experiences in her role as Lived Expert Co-Chair of the British Psychological Society Division of Clinical Psychology PTMF Committee, contributing to the ongoing development the PTMF (MTMF).
Kristine Mikkelsen – A Danish psychologist working in private practice and cofounder of The Danish PTMF/MTMF-Network under the Danish Psychological Association.
